The West Begins to Doubt Georgian Leader

Follow this link to an article in Spiegel Online about plans to investigate what really happened in the brief war between Russia and Georgia. Many people are beginning to think that Saakashvili lied about the sequence of events.  The story also shows that Georgia might not be quite the democracy that our side paints it to be.

Perhaps it will become clearer that early reports one gets from the U.S. media are heavily tainted by influence form our government in Washington.

It is also clear that to get contrary information one must read news sources from outside this country. I have not yet seen this story reported by U.S. media.

Check Original Sources

I did find one letter to the editor in the Worcester T & G that I liked very much.

Follow this link to read the letter. This letter wisely suggests that instead of trusting what somebody tells you, that you should look at the original sources.  Original sources is how the book  Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong claims to refute some of what you learned in school.

There is a good deal of controversy in the comments to the letter. Some of which I instigated.

The Way Of The World

I presume you have heard about the new book by Ron Suskind called “The Way of the World“.

With George Tenet’s specific denial about some of the allegations in the book, you may have doubts as did I.

Follow this link to an item on Salon.com that is Suskind’s rebuttal.  In the Salon item, there is a link to another piece in Salon by Joe Conason.  This is worth reading, too.  Also in the first Salon piece is this link to the transcript on Ron Suskind’s web site.

Kucinich Presents Articles of Impeachment

Last night I received the following email message:

A few moments ago, (approximately 7:30 p.m. EDT), Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich took to the floor of the House of Representatives to present 35 Articles of Impeachment against George W. Bush. The House session is being televised live on C-SPAN.

I watched several hours of Kucinich’s presentation. I expected to wake up this morning to see headlines about this event. Much to my surprise, at 7:35 AM EDT, only Reuters is reporting this event. Follow this link to Reuters meager coverage. Even CSPAN is not mentioning the news that they covered live on their own network.

I guess we have just seen another way that the press has for fooling you. Just don’t bother to report the news if you don’t like it.

Now, at 7:50 AM EDT, I see that the news has finally hit Huffington Post. Follow this link to their article. You do have to do a text search on their home page to find the link to this article. How foolish of me to think this would be a major headline on the Huffington Post web site.

Follow this link to see the PDF version of the 65 page text of Kucinich’s indictment.

Follow this link to the version on Rep. Kucinich’s House Web Site. This version does not require a PDF reader. The link was suggested by ShelahJ on 10Jun2008.

I just noticed that C-SPAN finally has a link to the video and related stories. The preceding link is to C-SPAN’s home page. As time goes on, this article will get relegated to C-SPAN’s archives. This is the link to the Congressional Record for 09June2008.

Follow this link to a June 13, 2008 interview with Dennis Kucinich about his reasons for pushing the impeachment process.

With Friends Like These …

Max Blumenthal has a new article on Huffington post that introduces his mocumentary of Pastor John Hagee.

With friends like these “supporting” Israel, Israel doesn’t even need enemies.  What was said at this meeting scares me more than anything Rev. Wright has said.  That’s not saying much because Rev. Wright does not scare me at all.

Of course, Blumenthal has picked and chosen his snippets just as the main stream media has done to Wright.  So you have to be very skeptical.  Still it at least gives me pause.

What I find attractive about Obama’s and Wright’s message is that they say we need to stop attacking each other and start working together.  That means not making mocumetaries like this one, I suppose.  So, let’s take this all in good humor and not get too excited over it.

Open Letter to Keith Olbermann

I cannot seem to get past the gate keepers at the MSNBC.com web site to post this letter to Keith Olbermann. Here is what I wrote to the MSNBC editors in the hope that they would pass it on to Keith Olbermann.

You sure do not make it easy to leave messages for specific shows.

I’d like to ask Keith Olbermann why he keeps talking about Rev. Wright’s National Press Club appearance as if he has the foggiest notion what went on there.

I have viewed the entire video of Wright’s appearance at the National Press Club. It is nothing like how Keith and his guest represent it.

I can understand why they cannot report on this event honestly. There was nothing wrong with Wright’s prepared speech. However, during the question and answer period the MC kept asking him hostile questions. He answered them all with great humor, intelligence, and equanimity. Obviously the MC was not prepared for such erudite answers. She was unable to change course based on what she heard. The more she proceeded, the more foolish she looked. Since many questions were prepared by members of the press, this just made them look like complete fools.

Thus the press has a conflict of interest on reporting this event.

I would like to see the press post the complete video of Wright’s appearance on their web sites. They should then show specific pieces of the appearance to back up their claims about it. Then they should tell their audience to view the entire video to see if the reporting is fair.

I guess this will happen at about the same time that the press can admit that Stephen Colbert’s appearance at the Washington Press Club dinner a few years ago was hilariously funny.

In both cases the non-press audiences at these events understood what the press seems constitutionally unable to understand.

See my post about stopping propaganda to see what you can do to help me fight this battle with the media.
