{"id":1084,"date":"2008-11-13T14:38:34","date_gmt":"2008-11-13T18:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/?p=1084"},"modified":"2008-11-13T14:44:07","modified_gmt":"2008-11-13T18:44:07","slug":"is-anybody-watching-the-bailout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/2008\/11\/13\/is-anybody-watching-the-bailout\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Anybody Watching The Bailout?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Washington Post has a story, <a title=\"Oversight of Bailout\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/11\/12\/AR2008111202846.html?hpid=topnews\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Bailout Lacks Oversight Despite Billions Pledged<\/strong><\/a>, which I suppose has many interpretations depending on your world view.<\/p>\n<p>For the true conservatives among us, I suppose the lesson could be about the pitfalls of letting the government do economic things.<\/p>\n<p>For the anti-Bush among us, I suppose the lesson could be that competence in the executive branch still matters.\u00a0 I had mixed feelings about writing that last sentence, but here is how I came to justify it in my own mind. Congress imposed some very difficult deadlines to set up the oversight operation.\u00a0 It might be ok to let these deadlines slip a little if one could trust in the competence of the executive branch.\u00a0 So while Congess has not yet lived up to its obligation to keep a watch on the executive, it wouldn&#8217;t be such an issue if it were an executive branch run by someone who has shown he is trustworthy and competent.<\/p>\n<p>Reading the <a title=\"Comments made on Huffinton POst web site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2008\/11\/12\/bailout-lacks-oversight-d_n_143465.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Huffington Post web site comments on this story<\/strong><\/a> makes me wish I had known about the C-SPAN coverage of the hearings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Washington Post has a story, Bailout Lacks Oversight Despite Billions Pledged, which I suppose has many interpretations depending on your world view.
