{"id":1117,"date":"2008-11-18T21:15:05","date_gmt":"2008-11-19T01:15:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/?p=1117"},"modified":"2008-11-19T12:15:38","modified_gmt":"2008-11-19T16:15:38","slug":"global-crisis-orientation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/2008\/11\/18\/global-crisis-orientation\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Crisis Orientation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The web site, <a title=\"Baselinescenario.com web sote\" href=\"http:\/\/baselinescenario.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Baseline Scenario<\/strong><\/a>, provides resources to understand the current global financial and economic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The first item on the web site, <a title=\"Global Crisis Orientation\" href=\"http:\/\/baselinescenario.com\/2008\/10\/20\/global-crisis-orientation\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Global Crisis Orientation<\/strong><\/a>, suggests four ways for getting the most out of the site.<\/p>\n<p>Today there was a <a title=\"Webcast of class\" href=\"http:\/\/baselinescenario.com\/2008\/11\/17\/mit-global-crisis-class-tuesday-november-18th\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>webcast of Simon Johnson&#8217;s class  on the global crisis<\/strong><\/a> at the Sloan School of Management at MIT.\u00a0 A recording will be available to download later in the week, probably on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>There was some tutorial information at the beginning of the class to explain some of the issues in the crisis.\u00a0 In particular, I learned some facts about CDOs (collateralized debt obligations) that I wish I had understood months ago.<\/p>\n<p>The members of the class had diverse backgrounds in industry, finance, real-estate, and government from many countries around the world. The information and points of view\u00a0 that they contributed to the discussion was most enlightening.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to RichardH for letting me know about the webcast in time for me to view it live.<\/p>\n<hr size=\"3\" \/>19-Nov-2008 Update<\/p>\n<p>In the description for the <a title=\"Senate Budget Committee Hearings\" href=\"http:\/\/budget.senate.gov\/democratic\/hearingstate.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Senate Budget Committee hearing<\/strong><\/a> at which he was supposed to testify today, the listing is <a title=\"Johnson Biography\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iie.com\/staff\/author_bio.cfm?author_id=586\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dr. Simon Johnson<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; Senior Fellow at the <a title=\"Institute for International Economics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Peterson Institute for International Economics<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the book <a title=\"Amazon.com listing for this book\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Obamas-Challenge-Americas-Transformative-Presidency\/dp\/1603580794\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1227110098&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Obama&#8217;s Challenge: America&#8217;s Economic Crisis and the Power of a Transformative Presidency<\/strong><\/a> by Robert Kuttner,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Peter G. Peterson, the onetime secretary of commerce under Richard Nixon and billionaire former partner of the Blackstone Group, a private\u00a0 equity firm, has written four books over the past two decades bemoaning the cost of entitlements and forecasting disaster.\u00a0 Peterson recently endowed the <a title=\"Peter G. Peterson Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pgpf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Peter G.
