{"id":11592,"date":"2012-07-20T09:23:43","date_gmt":"2012-07-20T14:23:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/?p=11592"},"modified":"2012-07-20T09:41:45","modified_gmt":"2012-07-20T14:41:45","slug":"in-roxbury-romney-hits-obamas-business-message","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/2012\/07\/20\/in-roxbury-romney-hits-obamas-business-message\/","title":{"rendered":"In Roxbury, Romney hits Obama\u2019s business message"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a local newspaper I was reading the article <em><strong>In Roxbury,<\/strong> <strong>Romney hits Obama\u2019s business message<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the first 3 column inches of the printed story we read,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mitt Romney on a visit to a Roxbury truck company Thursday slammed President Obama for suggesting profitable businesses owe their success to government.<\/p>\n<p>Flanked by denim-clad workers in a garage bay at Middlesex Truck &amp; Coach, Romney praised company owner Brian Maloney and his family, asserting \u201cthey did build this business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Romney\u2019s brief address was a direct assault on a remark Obama made during a campaign event in Virginia last Friday. \u201cIf you\u2019ve got a business \u2014 you didn\u2019t build that,\u201d the president said. \u201cSomebody else made that happen.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>20\u00bd column inches later in the story, we read the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In Virginia, Obama\u2019s blunt \u201cyou didn\u2019t build that\u201d was accompanied by, \u201cThere was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As in all reputable newspapers, lies come first, truth comes later.<\/p>\n<p>The story also points out about the founder of the business where Romney spoke:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In fact, the city and federal governments appear to have played at least some role in Middlesex Truck &amp; Coach\u2019s early growth.<\/p>\n<p>Maloney founded his company as an auto body shop in Cambridge in 1966, while pursuing an MBA at Boston College. In the late 1970s, according to a 1986 Globe profile of the business, \u201che approached Boston city officials because a preferential bank loan was possible if his firm relocated to the Crosstown Industrial Park,\u201d where Middlesex Truck &amp; Coach remains to this day.<\/p>\n<p>In its first year at the new location, Maloney\u2019s company accepted a $560,000 federal government contract to overhaul 10 buses. Within a half-decade of the move, Maloney reported, his company had quintupled its annual revenue.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If it weren&#8217;t for the fact that I know Romney is just spouting political rhetoric, I would think that Romney suffered from terminal stupidity in pretending not to understand the meaning of what President Obama was saying.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In context, Democrats argue, Obama and Warren were simply noting that successful Americans have benefited from public investments \u2014 the roads that make delivery of goods possible, the schools that educate workers, the police and fire services that keep plants safe.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If Romney really doesn&#8217;t understand the role that government plays, then he should not take a position in government, should he?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a local newspaper I was reading the article In Roxbury, Romney hits Obama\u2019s business message.
