{"id":13916,"date":"2013-07-08T10:30:42","date_gmt":"2013-07-08T14:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/?p=13916"},"modified":"2013-07-08T10:31:57","modified_gmt":"2013-07-08T14:31:57","slug":"unverified-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/2013\/07\/08\/unverified-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Unverified science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The Boston Globe<\/em> has published the OpEd piece <a title=\"The Boston Globe article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/opinion\/2013\/07\/07\/for-research-useful-has-reproducible\/MjyEf0q7HDlWvOTmNFfl8L\/comments.html?event=event12\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Unverified science: Studies that can\u2019t be replicated create a problem with trust \u2014 and funds<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 The fortuitous publication of this piece this morning gives me a place to comment with the letter to the editor that I composed in my mind last night while trying to go to sleep.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If the editors of The Boston Globe read this piece, they would immediately stop publishing the series &#8220;Uncommon Knowledge&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I imagine the quandary of the people putting together such a column.\u00a0 They must search for results that are unexpected, counter-intuitive, and surprising.\u00a0 After an item meets these criteria, I wonder if anybody asks whether this is good science, repeatable, the conclusions fit the data, and are the most probable explanation of the data.
