{"id":13978,"date":"2013-07-27T10:56:05","date_gmt":"2013-07-27T14:56:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/?p=13978"},"modified":"2013-07-27T10:56:05","modified_gmt":"2013-07-27T14:56:05","slug":"warren-signs-letter-backing-yellen-to-lead-the-fed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/2013\/07\/27\/warren-signs-letter-backing-yellen-to-lead-the-fed\/","title":{"rendered":"Warren signs letter backing Yellen to lead the Fed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just yesterday while we were visiting cousins we remarked that it would be interesting to see where Senator Warren comes down on the issue of choosing the next Federal Reserve Chairperson.\u00a0 This morning <em>The Boston Globe<\/em> has two items.<\/p>\n<p>The story <a title=\"The Boston Globe Article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/news\/politics\/2013\/07\/26\/senator-elizabeth-warren-signs-letter-backing-rival-larry-summers-lead-federal-reserve\/b9QUUuMBFWAqWWu0ln10zL\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Warren signs letter backing Yellen to lead the Fed<\/strong><\/a> settles the question.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Senator Elizabeth Warren on Friday urged President Obama to appoint Janet Yellen to head the Federal Reserve, choosing to back Yellen instead of her former Harvard colleague, Larry Summers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The Boston Globe<\/em> also had the column by Shirley Leung, <a title=\"The Boston Globe Article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/business\/2013\/07\/26\/the-case-for-janet-yellen-next-fed-chairman\/J0YaNUqZtPfz87jzqHhnYJ\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The case for Janet Yellen as the next Fed chairman<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSo why isn\u2019t she a shoo-in? The \u2018whispering\u2019 campaign against her among industry types has been deafening. \u2018Doesn\u2019t understand markets.\u2019 Translation: She may not bail us out if we get into trouble again. \u2018Not assertive enough.\u2019 Translation: She won\u2019t stand up for us against the populists who want more regulation. \u2018Lacks gravitas.\u2019 Translation: She doesn\u2019t show up very often in the financial media.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I had also read elsewhere how the other candidate, Larry Summers, has the ear of President Obama.\u00a0 I think it is quite possible that this loss of an ear to Larry Summers is one of the reasons that the President has been so ineffective in fixing our economic problems.\u00a0 A recalcitrant minority of Republican Senators who abuse the power of the filibuster does not help in solving our economic problems, but the President just has not seemed as if he is thoroughly convinced about the correct economic policy, himself.<\/p>\n<p>On issues of policy, Janet Yellen seems to be on the correct side and Larry Summers appears to be on the wrong side.\u00a0 You might think this would be enough on such an important matter to make the President&#8217;s decision an easy one to make.\u00a0 The trouble is that the President just does not seem to know which side is the correct side.\u00a0 He has given too much ear to the wrong side since the day he came to office.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just yesterday while we were visiting cousins we remarked that it would be interesting to see where Senator Warren comes down on the issue of choosing the next Federal Reserve Chairperson.\u00a0 This morning The Boston Globe has two items.
