Robert McDonnell\u2019s health secretary Dr. William Hazel Jr. as his own. And in so doing, McAuliffe, a Democrat who ran explicitly on his support for reproductive rights, has betrayed the very pro-choice voters who helped elect him.<\/p>\n<p>Hazel, an orthopedic surgeon, is no friend to women\u2019s rights. He was criticized for his\u00a0<strong>handling<\/strong>\u00a0of the adoption of a law that mandates an ultrasound be performed on a pregnant person seeking an abortion, regardless of medical necessity, and forces the patient to pay for it. As the Richmond Times-Dispatch has <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/news\/state-regional\/government-politics\/mcauliffe-to-retain-hazel-as-health-secretary\/article_7253352a-6798-11e3-89b6-001a4bcf6878.html\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a><\/strong><em>,\u00a0<\/em>he oversaw the health and human resources department at a time when draconian new abortion clinic regulations were promulgated. Hazel also spoke at\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberty.edu\/news\/index.cfm?PID=18495&amp;MID=97118\" target=\"_blank\">Liberty University<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in opposition to the Affordable Care Act, an ultra-conservative university whose own\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/witchcraft-and-abortion-par-sexual-assault-and-felony-conviction-liberty-university\" target=\"_blank\">c<strong>ode of conduct<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0includes a $500 fine and 30 hours of disciplinary community service for students who have an abortion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Makes you wonder if it is even worth voting for a Democratic male candidate.\u00a0 Maybe it is not too late for the netroots to rise up in protest.<\/p>\n<p>I like the wording above about rules for a &#8220;pregnant person&#8221;.\u00a0 That&#8217;s gender neutrality.\u00a0 It can be applied equally to men who are pregnant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Salon has the article Women\u2019s rights sold out again: McAuliffe\u2019s betrayal.
