In Misery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t know if this is an American trait or if it is world-wide, but we sure do love to <a title=\"Definition of wallow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/wallow\" target=\"_blank\">wallow in misery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b> <\/b>to indulge oneself in possessions, emotion, etc: to wallow in self-pity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The Boston Globe<\/em> is just one example that is pretty typical across all of our media.\u00a0 Here is a sampling of headlines in today&#8217;s newspaper.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a title=\"The Boston Globe story\" helped?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t actually read any of the stories above, but I feel safe in making comments about them.\u00a0 The pattern is so familiar.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern that takes the cake is the one presumably in item 5 <a title=\"The Boston Globe story\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2014\/04\/14\/resurgence-anxiety-likely-some-children-around-bombing-anniversary-boston-marathon-anxiety-likely-resurface-children-around-bombing-anniversary\/NQ6U0ONsQMD88etuzOj51M\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Marathon bombing anxiety likely to return in children<\/a>.\u00a0 The Boston Globe reports to its complete amazement the lingering effects.\u00a0 They no doubt have no self-awareness of the role that The Boston Globe itself plays in perpetuating the anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>We just cannot seem to let this story go.\u00a0 We want to hold onto the pain and misery as long as we possibly can.\u00a0 We keep wanting to relive the victimhood that those awful people imposed on us.\u00a0 It is almost &#8211; if we never forget it or even let it sink lower down in our memories, then we will be punishing the perpetrators.\u00a0 We never seem to think that holding onto these memories and continually refreshing them is a way to elevate the perpetrators to mythical status.\u00a0 Is there anything good that a person could do that would prolong their fame and glory as long as the memory of what an evildoer &#8220;accomplishes&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>What other disasters\u00a0 do we seem to love to celebrate &#8211; Pearl Harbor, The Twin Towers attack, Oklahoma City bombing, Fort Hood Shooting, Columbine, Sandy Hook?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this wallowing takes our minds off the real and solvable problems we face.\u00a0 I am just grasping at straws for an explanation.\u00a0 Perhaps you have a better one.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\"
