{"id":1749,"date":"2009-05-05T11:55:02","date_gmt":"2009-05-05T15:55:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/?p=1749"},"modified":"2009-05-05T12:02:00","modified_gmt":"2009-05-05T16:02:00","slug":"sec-chief-says-new-short-selling-rules-a-priority","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/2009\/05\/05\/sec-chief-says-new-short-selling-rules-a-priority\/","title":{"rendered":"SEC chief says new short-selling rules a priority"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Follow <a title=\"AP Story on Yahoo\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/SEC-chief-says-new-apf-15134028.html?.v=4\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>this link<\/strong><\/a> to the AP story about SEC Chair Mary Schapiro saying new short-selling rules are a priority.<\/p>\n<p>What a difference 100 days make.\u00a0 It was in 2007, that the Bush appointed SEC chairman helped rescind the 60 year old uptick rule that some want to see re-instated.<\/p>\n<p>The article is careful to point out that short selling is legal.\u00a0 What I find odd is that there is no mention of enforcing rules about naked short selling.\u00a0 This practice is supposed to be illegal, but breaking of these rules is widely flaunted.<\/p>\n<p>Schapiro says that there is no &#8220;specific empirical evidence&#8221; that the absence of the uptick rule fueled abnormal market volatiliy.\u00a0 However, abnormal market volatility is not the only ill that brings forth calls for enforcement of the rules.<\/p>\n<p>Even if a small number of viable companies were driven out of business by naked short selling attacks, then the law ought to be enforced and the violators punished.\u00a0 This is a completely different issue from statistical measures of the overall volatility of the market as a whole.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Follow this link to the AP story about SEC Chair Mary Schapiro saying new short-selling rules are a priority.
