{"id":18627,"date":"2014-10-28T09:51:14","date_gmt":"2014-10-28T13:51:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/?p=18627"},"modified":"2014-10-28T09:51:14","modified_gmt":"2014-10-28T13:51:14","slug":"halfway-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/2014\/10\/28\/halfway-there\/","title":{"rendered":"Halfway There"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>New Economic Perspectives<\/em> has the article <a title=\"New Economic Perspectives article\" href=\"http:\/\/neweconomicperspectives.org\/2014\/10\/halfway.html\" target=\"_blank\">Halfway There<\/a>.\u00a0 It discusses the implications of a NASA study and a WWF study.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you graph this wildlife population loss, it looks uncannily similar to the graph-line of \u201cNature\u201d in the HANDY Model: a point is reached where, suddenly, after a steady rise, or a gradual equilibrium, the graph-line of \u201cNature\u2019s\u201d population changes direction and begins to plummet. What is startling about the HANDY Model is that when this happens, the human populations of \u201cElites\u201d and \u201cCommoners\u201d continue to rise, crossing the falling graph-line of \u201cNature.\u201d This is called \u201covershoot\u201d\u2014the point where the human population begins consuming \u201cNature\u2019s\u201d resources faster than \u201cNature\u201d can replenish them. The human population, after some period of \u201covershoot,\u201d begins (of necessity) to collapse as well. The population of \u201cCommoners\u201d collapses first because the \u201cElites\u201d are able, for a period of time, to thrive on their \u201cWealth.\u201d In some iterations of the model, \u201cNature\u201d recovers after the \u201cElite\u201d population finally base-lines; in other iterations \u201cNature\u201d fails to recover at all\u2014the world becomes simply a wasteland, like one of those planets we keep investigating to see if it ever supported life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a food for thought kind of article.\u00a0 I am not claiming that these studies proved anything, or that we should jump right on it and change our behavior immediately as per the prescriptions in the article.
