Over the past 50 years, politicians have mastered the use of dog whistles \u2013 code words that turn Americans against each other while turning the country over to plutocrats. This political tactic, says Haney L\u00f3pez, is \u201cthe dark magic\u201d by which middle-class voters have been seduced to vote against their own economic interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt comes out of a desire to win votes. And in that sense\u2026 It\u2019s racism as a strategy. It\u2019s cold, it\u2019s calculating, it\u2019s considered,\u201d Haney L\u00f3pez tells Bill, \u201cit\u2019s the decision to achieve one\u2019s own ends, here winning votes, by stirring racial animosity.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The second part is <a href=\"http:\/\/billmoyers.com\/episode\/ian-haney-lopez-on-the-dog-whistle-politics-of-race-part-two\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Dog Whistle Politics of Race, Part II<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nPoliticians manipulate deep prejudice to rouse hostility against minorities and the government, according to Haney L\u00f3pez, and summon support for policies that make economic inequality even worse. And it\u2019s not just Republicans and the tea party who have used this \u201cstrategic racism\u201d to win votes, but Democrats as well.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The point of this presentation is not to demonize the people who are the targets of these strategies.
