I have not been following the story about Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell’s celebration of southern history, except to notice the headlines.<\/p>\n

No matter what your reaction to either side of this exchange, there might be something there that adds to your understanding of people. It might leave you with something to think about.<\/p>\n

For completeness sake, I tracked down Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell’s proclamation of Confederate History month<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

I thought the following clause of the proclamation was a fairly decent bow to the reality of the Confederacy that somewhat mitigated the issuing of the proclamation.<\/p>\n

\nWHEREAS, it is important for all Virginians to understand that the institution of slavery led to this war and was an evil and inhumane practice that deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights and all Virginians are thankful for its permanent eradication from our borders, and the study of this time period should reflect upon and learn from this painful part of our history; and <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What I didn’t realize was that the clause was added last Wenesday after the governor received complaints about the proclamation.<\/p>\n
