{"id":3737,"date":"2010-04-14T21:20:13","date_gmt":"2010-04-15T02:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/?p=3737"},"modified":"2010-04-14T21:22:49","modified_gmt":"2010-04-15T02:22:49","slug":"no-wonder-the-tea-pariers-are-angry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/2010\/04\/14\/no-wonder-the-tea-pariers-are-angry\/","title":{"rendered":"No Wonder The Tea Partiers Are Angry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Follow <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/stories\/2010\/04\/14\/eveningnews\/main6396553.shtml\">this link<\/a> to the <em>CBS Nightly News<\/em> report <em>Earmarks: Who Brought Home the Bacon<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Not to be judgmental or anything, but this is the usual cheap shot, lazy journalism that one can expect from <q>professional<\/q> journalists.<\/p>\n<p>I call it lazy <q>journalism<\/q> because the report is based on nothing more than the  <q>Pig Book<\/q> released by Citizens Against Government Waste.  In other words CBS is just repeating what someone else said without any fact checking by CBS.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the comment I made on their web site about this story:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nYou should be more careful with the words you use in your reports.<\/p>\n<p><q>whopping 9,100 pork barrel projects<\/q><\/p>\n<p>How do you decide 9,100 projects is a whopping number? What would be an acceptable number?<\/p>\n<p>How do you know that these projects are <q>pork barrel<\/q>?<\/p>\n<p>Do you think that <q>potato pest management and research<\/q> might be of huge economic importance to a state with a large number of potato farmers? Why would you consider that pork barrel?<\/p>\n<p>What is wrong with <q>study mosquito trapping in Florida<\/q>? It&#8217;s not like Florida doesn&#8217;t have any mosquito problems and that mosquitoes don&#8217;t cause disease and death.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know what the scientific justification for <q>catfish genome mapping<\/q> is? If not, how do you know it is pork barrel.<\/p>\n<p>You state that there is <q>$16.5 billion in 2010<\/q> spent on these projects. You also state that <q>Despite a deficit that&#8217;s pushing $1.5 trillion<\/q><\/p>\n<p>These projects represent slightly more than 1% of the deficit. Was it worth spending the broadcast time and trying to incite your audience over 1% of the deficit, not even the budget, over projects that may or may not have significant merit?<\/p>\n<p>Does anyone have a sense of proportion anymore? Are there responsible journalists anymore? Or is it it journalism&#8217;s duty to ridicule politicians because you have made them an easy target?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Follow this link to the CBS Nightly News report Earmarks: Who Brought Home the Bacon.
