{"id":3959,"date":"2010-05-11T19:40:14","date_gmt":"2010-05-12T00:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/?p=3959"},"modified":"2012-10-09T08:40:27","modified_gmt":"2012-10-09T13:40:27","slug":"hays-rebellion-and-the-modern-day-tea-party-movement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/2010\/05\/11\/hays-rebellion-and-the-modern-day-tea-party-movement\/","title":{"rendered":"Shays&#8217; Rebellion and the Modern Day Tea Party Movement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of this article, I will explain how I came to look up Shays&#8217; Rebellion.<\/p>\n<p>The irony that I realized is that if the Tea Party is motivated by the types of things that motivated Shays&#8217; Rebellion then they should be firmly in the Democratic\/Liberal camp.\u00a0 So rather than dismiss them, we ought to understand them.\u00a0 We can then explain why the Democrats are the most obvious choice for resolving their grievances.<\/p>\n<p>The further irony is that the types of things that the Shays&#8217; Rebellion was about were ultimately resolved by the writing of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in an effort to form a stronger federal government.\u00a0 It was the weak Articles of Confederation that allowed the abuses to which Shays rebelled.<\/p>\n<p>The kind of country the Tea Partiers&#8217; want to get back is the one that existed before Reaganomics hit us with a vengeance.\u00a0 They haven&#8217;t quite realized that this is what they are asking for.\u00a0 We need to explain it.<\/p>\n<p>I found several interesting sites to flesh out your memory of what you may or may not have learned about Shays&#8217; Rebellion in your history studies in high school.<\/p>\n<p>I started with the WikiPedia article <a title=\"WikiPedia Article\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shays%27_Rebellion\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Shays&#8217; Rebellion<\/strong><\/a>. Here is where I found the origin of the Thomas Jefferson quote so frequently cited by Tea Partiers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a title=\"Thomas Jefferson\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/\/wiki\/Thomas_Jefferson\">Thomas Jefferson<\/a>, who was serving as an ambassador to France at the time, refused to be alarmed by Shays&#8217; Rebellion. In a letter to a friend, he wrote that &#8220;a little rebellion now and then is a good thing. The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-Foner.2C_Eric_2006_16-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-Foner.2C_Eric_2006-16\"><span>[<\/span>17<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li id=\"cite_note-Foner.2C_Eric_2006-16\">^ <a href=\"#cite_ref-Foner.2C_Eric_2006_16-0\"><sup><em><strong>a<\/strong><\/em><\/sup><\/a> <a href=\"#cite_ref-Foner.2C_Eric_2006_16-1\"><sup><em><strong>b<\/strong><\/em><\/sup><\/a> Foner, Eric. &#8220;Give Me Liberty! An American History.&#8221; New York: W.W Norton &amp; Company, 2006. 219<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This article uses Historian Howard Zinn as a major source.\u00a0 I always like to cross-check his interpretation of history with more conventional sources.<\/p>\n<p>The Springfield Armory page on the <a title=\"National Park Service on Shay's Rebellion\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/spar\/historyculture\/shays-rebellion.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Shays&#8217; Rebellion<\/strong><\/a> on the National Park Service web site, seems to corroborate WikiPedia.<\/p>\n<p>The other side of Shays&#8217; rebellion is described in this link given by The National Park Service in this paragraph:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The <a title=\"Shays' Rebellion from the other side\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shaysrebellion.stcc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Shays\u2019 Rebellion &amp; the Making of a Nation website<\/strong><\/a> is the result of a collaboration among Springfield Technical Community College (STCC), the Springfield Armory NHS (US NPS), and the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association (PVMA).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I came to look this up because of a discussion that I got into on the OpEdNews web site in response to the article that I mentioned in the previous post, <a title=\"Post about OpEdNews\" href=\"http:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/2010\/05\/09\/stock-market-collapse-more-goldman-market-rigging\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Stock Market Collapse: More Goldman Market Rigging?<\/strong><\/a> I leave it up to you to look into this discussion if you are so inclined.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of this article, I will explain how I came to look up Shays&#8217; Rebellion.
