{"id":4115,"date":"2010-06-24T18:53:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-24T23:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/?p=4115"},"modified":"2010-06-24T18:53:34","modified_gmt":"2010-06-24T23:53:34","slug":"congress-fails-to-pass-an-extension-of-jobless-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/2010\/06\/24\/congress-fails-to-pass-an-extension-of-jobless-benefits\/","title":{"rendered":"Congress Fails to Pass an Extension of Jobless Benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The article, <a title=\"New York Times Story\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/06\/25\/us\/politics\/25jobs.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Congress Fails to Pass an Extension of Jobless Benefits<\/strong><\/a>, appears in <em>The New York Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It is clear to me that the Republicans still don&#8217;t understand how you get out of a recession.\u00a0 Their only expertise seems to be creating bubbles whose collapse causes recessions.<\/p>\n<p>They are fighting to keep the extension of jobless benefits from adding to the deficit.\u00a0 When you are trying to pump prime the economy to get out of a recession, the last thing you want to do is cut back the deficit <strong>now<\/strong>.\u00a0 I emphasize the word <strong>now<\/strong>. After we climb out of the recession there will be plenty of time to reduce the deficit.<\/p>\n<p>Well, knowing past history, we could cut the deficit and eventually run a surplus.\u00a0 When the Democrats finally accomplish this, the American voters will vote the Republicans back into office.\u00a0 What will be the Republican&#8217;s winning argument?\u00a0 This surplus is your money.\u00a0 You know how to spend it better than the government.\u00a0 Put us into office and we&#8217;ll cut taxes. Debt of $13 trillion?\u00a0 What, me worry?<\/p>\n<p>Now for the part of the argument the Republicans won&#8217;t give you.\u00a0 The national debt is also your money.\u00a0 You owe it, so pay it back.\u00a0 If we cut taxes instead of decreasing the debt, there will be another huge bubble and we will start the cycle over again.\u00a0 Of course we&#8217;ll think of new ways to blame Barney Frank.\u00a0 You will never knowingly face the consequences of your actions.\u00a0 The key word is knowingly.\u00a0 The consequences of your actions will be there whether you know it or not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The article, Congress Fails to Pass an Extension of Jobless Benefits, appears in The New York Times.
