{"id":9139,"date":"2011-12-11T23:00:41","date_gmt":"2011-12-12T04:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/?p=9139"},"modified":"2011-12-11T23:00:41","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T04:00:41","slug":"rescued-from-real-people-boston%e2%80%99s-de-occupied-dewey-park-now-re-landscaped-for-passing-motorists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ssgreenberg.name\/PoliticsBlog\/2011\/12\/11\/rescued-from-real-people-boston%e2%80%99s-de-occupied-dewey-park-now-re-landscaped-for-passing-motorists\/","title":{"rendered":"Rescued from Real People, Boston\u2019s De-Occupied Dewey Park Now Re-Landscaped for Passing Motorists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The post <a title=\"Post from Firedog Lake\" href=\"http:\/\/my.firedoglake.com\/scarecrow\/2011\/12\/10\/rescued-from-real-people-bostons-de-occupied-dewey-park-now-re-landscaped-for-passing-motorists\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rescued from Real People, Boston\u2019s De-Occupied Dewey Park Now Re-Landscaped for Passing Motorists<\/strong><\/a> has some very thought provoking ideas in it.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll quote just three paragraphs.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll have to read the article itself to fill in what came before and what came after.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So it was no surprise that the mostly young, idealistic and courageous occupiers were forced from day 1 to recreate government, to develop mechanisms to deal, face to face with drug abuse, violent\/uncontrolled behavior, unemployment, homelessness, hunger and poor health.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t all just marches and demonstrations and rallies and teach ins; it was also a daily struggle for human and humane survival.\u00a0 And the fact this was happening was also a daily embarrassment to the city and a reminder of how badly our cities fail for so many of their citizens.<\/p>\n<p>The occupation movement did not create these people or their problems \u2014 those who received the trillions in bailouts were far more responsible \u2014 nor did they\u00a0 exacerbate any of their conditions.\u00a0 Homeless, suffering people and conditions came to the occupation, and the movement did its best to deal with them.<\/p>\n<p>None of those conditions are gone merely because tents will now be replaced with freshly mowed grass that almost no one will see or walk on.\u00a0\u00a0 The problems and the people who struggle with them are still there, dispersed to who knows where, mostly out of sight and hence mostly out of mind.\u00a0 And that was probably the unacknowledged plan that compelled the good Mayor to lie.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think the Occupy Boston movement was about far more than we imagined.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The post Rescued from Real People, Boston\u2019s De-Occupied Dewey Park Now Re-Landscaped for Passing Motorists has some very thought provoking ideas in it.
