Fight For The Public Option

I submitted this photo to MoveOn.Org for possible inclusion in an ad they intend to produce.

Whether or not you believe the press reports about Obama wavering on the Medicare Option For All (The Public Option), it doesn’t hurt to let the President know where you stand

Emergency Petition In Support of Medicare For All 1

I got an urgent email from BoldProgressives.org.

Urgent news: Multiple media reports say that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is very close to rounding up the votes needed for a public health insurance option, but “the White House is pushing back against the idea” in order to get the support of Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME).

Tell the White House that the support of one Republican isn’t worth a bad bill.

PLEASE SIGN OUR EMERGENCY PETITION TO PRESIDENT OBAMA TODAY:

Medicare For All is the better name for the so called Public Option

Also remember that Olympia Snowe is the Republican who is so proud that, to save money, she stripped some state and local aid from the stimulus bill.  Now the state and local governments are cutting jobs due to lack of these funds.  This is the exact opposite of the purpose of the economic stimulus package which was to save and create jobs.  It is well recognized that Snowe’s meddling on this bill has made it significantly less effective.

Why let Olympia Snowe proudly destroy another needed part of an important legislative initiative?  If she represents moderate Republicanism, we don’t need any such moderation.

Fighting the Health Insurance Industry Lobbyists

Hi,

I just made a donation to Organizing for America’s health insurance reform campaign. We’re entering the final round of the fight for reform, and your support is needed now more than ever.

Join me in supporting reform at this crucial moment:

Thanks!

If you want to understand why we cannnot leave the “free” market completely to its own devices, see the post by RichardH, Rational Irrationality-The real reason that capitalism is so crash-prone.

This is the letter of explanation I received for the need for the donation.

Steven —

On Thursday, Vice President Biden called out the insurance industry’s escalating war on health reform in a special message to OFA, and asked for your help in fighting back.

Sure enough, the insurance industry is already stepping up the attack: Reports just leaked from a closed-door meeting where insurance industry lobbyists frantically warned Republican members of Congress that it was not in their interest to “ever vote for this thing” and said supporting reform is like “giving comfort to the enemy.” USA Today is reporting that groups opposing reform are lobbying at “a record pace” — and the Associated Press notes that they’ve already spent an astounding $32 million on TV ads this year.

This is what we’re up against. President Obama, Vice President Biden, and all of us together through OFA are fighting back — but success depends on having the resources to win.

Can you chip in $25 or more today to power our campaign?

In this fight, the insurance industry has their war chest and insider lobbyists. We have you. I know who I’m betting on.

Let’s win this thing.

War Fever at the Times: A Five-Day Log

Follow this link to read the story by David Bromwich that appears on the Huffington Post.

He has caught the New York Times slanting the news to foment more war just like they did before the latest Iraq war.

One of the people quoted by the Times was a supporter of the rural pacification program during the Vietnam War.  I wrote about this in my book review of Perfect Spy: – The Incredible Double Life of Pham Xuan An, Time Magazine Reporter and Vietnamese Communist Agent by Larry Berman. In that review, I pointed out the following:

Another thing that I learned from this book. When you see a local government figure carrying out policies that are clearly antithetical to the cause, maybe you don’t understand what cause the person is working for.

On page 148, “… Thao operated as one of the most trusted aides to Diem and was generally hailed as one of the South’s most successful anti-Communist crusaders. …”

On page 149, “Thao became one of the strongest advocates for agrovilles, self-contained modern villages aimed at separating insurgents from the rural population by moving peasants into large, well-defended villages that would allow the government to protect them. Thao knew the program would alienate peasants, and that is why he became its strongest proponent. The peasants hated agrovilles for many reasons, beginning with the fact that they were required to help build them and then move from their homes. The program produced protests and alienation toward Diem. When it was disbanded, Thao focused on strategic hamlets, convincing Diem to move quickly rather than slowly, which would elevate hostility and alienate the peasants. …”

How could Thao do that, you ask? Here is the part that I left out. On page 148, “Perhaps the most intriguing case of espionage involved Colonel Pham Ngoc Thao, whose mission was to destabilize the anti-Communist government of South Vietnam. …”
