In this video of an interview of Barney Frank, he explains what was disappointing in the President’s speech about Afghanistan. He also indicates that Boehner’s remarks were even more disappointing.

At the end he asks the question that I have always wondered about our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. How come it takes hundreds of thousands of our troops and years of training to be able to get one faction of a country militarily competent to fight another faction of people in their country who have not benefited from our training? Or in the case of Afghanistan, why were we so successful in training the Taliban, but cannot train the other faction? Perhaps that second question answers itself. If we hadn’t trained the Taliban to defeat an untrained army, we wouldn’t then have to exceed that training to defeat the Taliban.
