Bernie Sanders Has One of the Best Q & A Sessions of All Times

YouTube has the video Bernie Sanders Takes Questions from the crowd at Town Meeting Iowa 10/18/15 (2)

This has got to be one of the finest Q&A sessions I have ever heard. Even some non-corporate media pundits are focusing on one issue or another covered here, but I think the breadth of topics he talked about so well is what makes this a stunning video.

I can almost promise you that you will never see this video in the corporate media. It is your responsibility to see what the corporate media is trying to hide from you. Then get angry at them for suppressing serious talk about serious issues.

How Many Strikes Does Biden Get Before He Is Called Out?

Talking Points Memo had a Daybreaker post with the following in it:

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “Up until now…its been sympathy and puppies for Joe Biden. If he runs, there are a whole lot of reasons to NOT vote for him. Here are mine. He wrote the crime bill that led to the mass incarceration problem we have now. He is a huge proponent of the failed war on drugs. He has a horrible record on IP and its not too far fetched to think his influence on this has been seen in the current administration. He savaged Anita Hill in the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings probably paving the way for Justice Thomas to be confirmed by 1 vote. Those creepy back rubs.”

I decided to do some checking on some of the above accusations and one that I already knew about.

The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994

H.R. 3355, Pub.L. 103–322 is an act of Congress dealing with crime and law enforcement that became law in 1994. It is the largest crime bill in the history of the United States, consisting of 356 pages providing for 100,000 new police officers, $9.7 billion in funding for prisons and $6.1 billion in funding for prevention programs which were designed with significant input from experienced police officers.[1] Sponsored by U.S. Representative Jack Brooks of Texas, the bill was originally written by Senator Joe Biden of Delaware, passed by Congress, and signed into law by President Bill Clinton.

Biden and Anita Hill, Revisited

Mr. Biden at the time was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. And while the Delaware Democrat ultimately voted against confirming Mr. Thomas, he was widely criticized by liberal legal advocates and women’s groups as having mismanaged the allegations of sexual harassment made by Ms. Hill against her former employer, Mr. Thomas, at the Department of Education and at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, at those hearings.

Joe Biden’s Bankruptcy Bill Could Complicate His Presidential Run

As Vice President Joe Biden reportedly mulls a bid for the U.S. presidency, his champions portray him as a credible alternative to Democratic Party front-runner Hillary Clinton, who faces accusations that she is beholden to the financial industry. But a Biden campaign risks confronting the scorn of one of the party’s most influential progressives, Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Though Biden has reportedly sought her favor, Warren has historically disdained him, charging him with acting as a tool of the credit card industry by limiting debt relief for people grappling with financial troubles.

As a Harvard law professor in 2002, Warren published a journal article excoriating Biden for playing a leading role in delivering legislation that made it more difficult for Americans to reduce debts through bankruptcy filings. As the senator from Delaware, Biden’s repeated push for the bill—signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2005—amounted to “vigorous support of legislation that hurts women,” Warren declared. She said “the group that will be most affected by the changes in the bankruptcy legislation Senator Biden so forcefully supports will be women, particularly women heads of household who are supporting children.”

In a separate 2003 book she co-authored with her daughter, Warren said, “Senators like Joe Biden should not be allowed to sell out women in the morning and be heralded as their friend in the evening.”

You can do your own research on his record on IP and on the war on drugs.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz Is A Threat To The Democratic Party

Naked Capitalism has the article Corrupt Corporatists Steve Israel And Debbie Wasserman Schultz Declare Fratricidal War Against Progressives.

Here is an excerpt from the article that is specifically about Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

After playing Hamlet for weeks and blocking a DNC resolution, she finally came around to support the Iran agreement, but only when it became pretty clear she would have lost her post as DNC chair, a message apparently delivered in person by vice president Biden. It must be exhausting to have to constantly answer to wealthy campaign donors and corporate lobbyists when making these decisions.”

So, when I have been complaining about Schultz in previous posts, I wasn’t just flapping my gums. I have been aware of this record of hers and Steve Israel. This awareness is what had turned me against them. The flap over the debates was just the latest episode of their traitorous behavior.

Just in case you don’t follow the link to read the article, here are the introductory paragraphs.

Steve Israel, de facto head of the DCCC (and the most outspoken member of their recruitment committee) and with a new title Pelosi invented for him, Chair, Policy and Communications, Israel’s war against progressives is multi-faceted. Although Pelosi, when giving him his new job, said that he “has consistently proved the depth of his wisdom and the strength of his strategic vision in making our case to the American people,” she overlooked the fact that under his catastrophic chairmanship, the DCCC– largely because of him and only him– managed to lose a net of 8 seats in a year when Obama won the country and a much smarter DSCC chairman just about swept the field and won tough races in Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. Israel’s incompetence and /or lame strategy cost the Democrats CA-10 (Denham), CA-21 (Valadao), CA-25 (McKeon), CO-06 (Coffman), FL-10 (Webster), IL-13 (Davis), MI-01 (Benishek), MI-06 (Upton), MI-11 (Bentivolio), MN-02 (Kline), MN-06 (Bachmann), NV-03 (Heck), NJ02 (LoBiondo), NJ-03 (Runyan), NJ-05 (Garrett), NY-11 (Grimm), NY-19 (Gibson), NY-22 (Hanna), NY-23 (Reed), NY-27 (Collins), NC-08 (Hudson), NC-11 (Meadows), NC-13 (Holding), OH-06 (Johnson), OH-16 (Renacci), PA-06 (Gerlach), PA-07 (Meehan), PA-08 (Fitzpatrick), PA-12 (Rothfus), PA-15 (Dent), TN-04 (DesJarlais), VA-02 (Rigell), WI-07 (Duffy) and WI-08 (Ribble). [bolded districts were won by Obama as Israel’s depth of wisdom and strength of his strategic vision were leading the Democrats to another defeat.]

In 2014 Israel led the DCCC to an even more disastrous year by following his same lame playbook. He lost a net of 13 seats, primarily conservaDems who he had counseled to vote with the GOP at every opportunity, like Ron Barber (Blue Dog-AZ), Joe Garcia (New Dem-FL), John Barrow (Blue Dog-GA), Brad Schneider (New Dem-IL), Dan Maffei (New Dem-NY), Pete Gallego (Blue Dog-TX), Nick Rahall (Blue Dog-WV). 3 other right-wing Democrats– Bill Owens (New Dem-NY), Mike McIntyre (Blue Dog-NC) and Jim Matheson (Blue Dog-UT)– knew they would be defeated and retired, their seats all going to Republicans. Israel’s only victories were for right-wing Democrats Gwen Graham (Blue Dog-FL), Brad Ashford (Blue Dog-NE) and Pete Aguilar (New Dem-CA), Aguilar the only one likely to retain his seat in 2016.

Why would Nancy Pelosi support these people who have cost her the Speakership of the House? What possible hold could they have over her that she would keep these people in their positions at the expense of her Speakership and the Democratic Party’s hold on the House majority? How much money would they have to offer you to take a dive on your position as Speaker of the House?

Fighting the War Against CNN

CNN is waging a war on the people of the United States by trying to get them to believe the story about the Democratic Debate that CNN wants them to believe instead of what millions of people saw with their own eyes when they watched this debate on CNN of all places.

So the people are taking the fight right back to CNN in the funniest thing I have seen on the internet in a long time.

Look at the CNN Facebook page and search for the word “sanders” using your browser’s text search facility. You will find some of the best humor on the internet in the comments on each article. It might give you ideas on how to fight the war against CNN. You could mark some of the best comments with “like”.

Comment: Proof Hillary PAID CNN to Delete Bernie Sanders…

When you watch the above video, don’t forget that the water consumed is not taken off the planet. It is recycled. You might find that some of the ways it gets recycled are repulsive. However, if this smooth talker can get you to forget this one important fact, what else might he convince you of?

Amazingly, I don’t think my search for the word “sanders” on the CNN page led me to a single news story about Bernie Sanders. How strange is that? And we used to laugh at the countries behind the “iron curtain” because those people never got real news; they got only propaganda.

Why Does Hillary Keep Making Mistakes At Our Expense?

And here’s another exchange from the debates courtesy of the CNN transcript of the debate.

O’MALLEY: Yes. Anderson, I want to associate myself with many of the items that the senator from Vermont mentioned, and I actually did them in our state. We raised the minimum wage, passed the living wage, invested more in infrastructure, went four years in a row without a penny’s increase in college tuition.

But there’s another piece that Senator Sanders left out tonight, but he’s been excellent about underscoring that. And that is that we need to separate the casino, speculative, mega-bank gambling that we have to insure with our money, from the commercial banking – namely, reinstating Glass-Steagall.

Secretary Clinton mentioned my support eight years ago. And Secretary, I was proud to support you eight years ago, but something happened in between, and that is, Anderson, a Wall Street crash that wiped out millions of jobs and millions of savings for families. And we are still just as vulnerable Paul Volcker says today.

We need to reinstate Glass-Steagall and that’s a huge difference on this stage among us as candidates.

COOPER: Just for viewers at home who may not be reading up on this, Glass-Steagall is the Depression-era banking law repealed in 1999 that prevented commercial banks from engaging in investment banking and insurance activities.

Secretary Clinton, he raises a fundamental difference on this stage. Senator Sanders wants to break up the big Wall Street banks. You don’t. You say charge the banks more, continue to monitor them. Why is your plan better?

CLINTON: Well, my plan is more comprehensive. And frankly, it’s tougher because of course we have to deal with the problem that the banks are still too big to fail. We can never let the American taxpayer and middle class families ever have to bail out the kind of speculative behavior that we saw.

But we also have to worry about some of the other players – AIG, a big insurance company; Lehman Brothers, an investment bank. There’s this whole area called “shadow banking.” That’s where the experts tell me the next potential problem could come from.

CLINTON: So I’m with both Senator Sanders and Governor O’Malley in putting a lot of attention onto the banks. And the plan that I have put forward would actually empower regulators to break up big banks if we thought they posed a risk. But I want to make sure we’re going to cover everybody, not what caused the problem last time, but what could cause it next time.

She is apparently using the same advisers who so badly advised Bill Clinton on deregulation.

There is no telling what will cause the next collapse. No matter what laws you write, the crooks on Wall Street will find a scheme to get around the law. That is what con artists do.

So rather than try to stay one step ahead of the con artists with billions if not trillions of dollars at their disposal, you make sure that these entities are small enough that they cannot bring down the world economy no matter what scheme they come up with. You make sure nobody is too big to jail. That is exactly why Teddy Roosevelt knew that the trusts needed to be broken up. That is why we used to enforce anti-trust laws. I’d like to think that Clinton just does not understand, and does not understand how badly she is being advised by the same con artists that thought up the last financial debacle.

How can it be that a smart lawyer like everyone believes her to be, including me, seems to understand these con artists less than a measly retired software engineer like me does? I can’t judge what is in her heart and in her mind, but I do know that her behavior is dangerous to the country and to the world.

If she is the Democratic nominee in 2016, there is no way in the world I could vote for her. If someone is going to destroy the economy and the country, I’d much rather it be a Republican. I don’t want people in the future to think that anyone who claimed to be a progressive could do as much damage as she will. Progressive is my label, and I don’t want anyone to sully it like they have already done to the label liberal.

Not in my name will I have any part in helping this woman be President.

October 14, 2015

Maybe it is exactly my software engineer experience that makes me understand this better than Hillary Clinton.

When you are part of, and especially when you lead, a team of software engineers who are responsible for a large, complex software system, you understand the issue of bugs being in your software. You have to know that you certainly cannot anticipate all the bugs that might creep in. If you could, the bugs wouldn’t be there. So a good software engineer uses techniques that make it harder for bugs to get in, makes it easier to find bugs that are there, and avoids practices that allow the damage from bugs to propagate through the system. So there are certain practices that you avoid in developing a system because you know they have unpredictable consequences.

In the real world of complex economic systems, you know that allowing any single entity to grow too large is a dangerous system practice. You know you can’t anticipate all the things that could go wrong, so you try to compartmentalize mistakes so that they will have limited effect when they occur. You build firewalls between pieces of your system to keep problems localized. This is what the Glass-Steagall act did in the exact words of Martin O’Malley above. It may be less efficient when all is going well, but it saves your bacon when things go wrong. As Murphy has said, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.”

These same worries about big private entities certainly apply to large government as well. That is exactly why our founding ancestors built checks and balances into our system. When we get frustrated at the imagined inefficiencies and throw out these safety measures, we eventually pay a price for our folly. I guess the one thing that the founding ancestors might not have planned for is the absolute abuse of the checks and balances that our current crop of Republicans have come to perfect. Well, maybe they actually did anticipate it in considering that what the Supreme Court has allowed with Citizens United is the kind of corruption that they knew would kill the system.

Hillary’s Whopper About The TPP

Here is another whopper from Hillary Clinton in the debate. This is from the CNN transcript of the debate:

CLINTON: Well, actually, I have been very consistent. Over the course of my entire life, I have always fought for the same values and principles, but, like most human beings – including those of us who run for office – I do absorb new information. I do look at what’s happening in the world.

You know, take the trade deal [TPP}. I did say, when I was secretary of state, three years ago, that I hoped it would be the gold standard. It was just finally negotiated last week, and in looking at it, it didn’t meet my standards. My standards for more new, good jobs for Americans, for raising wages for Americans.

And I want to make sure that I can look into the eyes of any middle-class American and say, “this will help raise your wages.” And I concluded I could not.

When Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State, surely she knew that the composition of the American negotiating team and the people dominating our stances were all corporate lobbyists or corporate executives. She knew there were no representatives of the people putting in their suggestions. If she didn’t know, how come she didn’t when the rest of the world knew?

So how did she ever think that this deal would ever be a gold standard of anything but a huge transfer of wealth from the world’s middle class to the world’s rich oligarchs?

She is one damn good BS artist, and the people who want a woman President don’t seem to care or to know.

Surely Hillary Clinton can’t think that Elizabeth Warren doesn’t know how much Hillary is lying. Does Hillary think she can get away with this stuff at least until the election? Well, we certainly know that she is a women who has the courage to go for broke despite the odds. If it weren’t for the scads of money that she and Bill are going to make off of her Presidency, you’d have to feel a little bit sorry for someone who was so desperate to seize power.

Casino-Capitalists

The supposed front runner so far has done much in her career and in abetting her husband’s career that has enabled so few to have so much. Now they want us to give the keys to the hen house to the hired fox. (Do you see the irony in the network that calls itself Fox News?)

Quote from Democratic Debate

Oligarchs Say That Bernie Sanders Did Not Win The Debate

Naked Capitalism has a good article Sanders Debate “Results” as Case Study of the Modern Versailles Hall of Mirrors.

But what stood out head and shoulders even with my limited focus was on how horrible Clinton seemed. Oh, superficially she had the patter down best, and she had a clear presentation strategy: to use every opportunity to remind her audience of the breadth of her experience, on how many times she’d been a power player. Let us put aside the fact that pretty much everything she’s touched, from her effort to launch a national health plan to her tenure at State, has been a disaster.

I posted the following comment on the article:

I am surprised that nobody has commented on the Howard Dean strategy. The corporate media ended Howard Dean’s candidacy by repeatedly showing a doctored video portraying Dean as too angry.

Some of the local “news” shows I watched played that doctored video several times in one news show. By several, I mean at least 5 times.

Even I thought that though the doctored video was objectively false, that the media were trying to portray an underlying characteristic of Dean that they detected. Even I thought he was an angry man. Now I know that he was rightfully angry, but just ahead of his time.

I don’t think this tactic is going to work against Bernie Sanders because this time around the voters are just as angry.

Our counterattack is that “Oligarchs Say That Bernie Sanders Did Not Win The Debate” That meme puts Bernie Sanders’ name next to the idea of winning the debate. Think of the other ways you could phrase the meme that would put the wrong name in the same sentence as winning the debate.

Democratic Presidential Debate

The full October 13, 2015 CNN run Democratic Presidential Debate is available on YouTube

If you missed the debate, you can pretend you watched the debate and spout the opinions of the pundits, or you can watch the whole 2 hours and decide for yourself.

Warning: If you spout the pundits’ view that Hillary won the debate, the people who actually watched it or who have access to the internet will know you are fibbing.

October 15, 2015

YouTube has already taken down the above video. As of 8:35PM, the following video is still available on YouTube.

CNN has a transcript. You might have to read or at least download this quickly. (I have downloaded a copy for safekeeping.) CNN seems to be making a concerted effort to keep the public from seeing any unedited version of the debate. If you could see the actual debate, then you would know how badly CNN is lying in its analyses of the debate.

Here is an excerpt that they won’t want you to see once the realize the impact of what Hillary said.

CLINTON: Yeah.

You know, I – I respect the passion an intensity. I represented Wall Street, as a senator from New York, and I went to Wall Street in December of 2007 – before the big crash that we had – and I basically said, “cut it out! Quit foreclosing on homes! Quit engaging in these kinds of speculative behaviors.”

I took on the Bush administration for the same thing. So I have thought deeply and long about what we’re gonna do to do exactly what I think both the senator and the governor want, which is to rein in and stop this risk.

And my plan would have the potential of actually sending the executives to jail. Nobody went to jail after $100 billion in fines were paid…

Yes the woman that CNN said won the debate actually admitted that she thought of herself as representing Wall Street when she was a U.S. Senator from New York. I am surprised that there was no rebuttal that said, “And you seem to still represent Wall Street even though you aren’t a Senator anymore.”
